POLYHARPA: a naturalist and cultural study of the Harps in Polynesia
Objectives: to study the relationship between the nature of Harpa mollusks and the island culture of French Polynesia
Participants: Sasha 7, elementary student // Audrey 34, writer and teacher // Sebastien 36, doctor in fine arts and independent malacologist
Purposes: the dissemination of data collected in the field through various types of publications (specialized journals, popular magazines, website by Sébastien), the awareness of young audiences to the ecology of reef environments through children’s literature (ecological tale by Audrey), the making of a travel log on social networks and the testimony of a scientific research adventure through the eyes of a child (report by Sasha).
Dates: project to be completed in 2019, field research from June 24 to July 27
Places: Tahiti, Moorea, Tikehau, Rangiroa, Fakarava for the 2019 mission, with addings of the observations made in 1996 (Tahiti, Moorea), in 2005 (Tahiti, Moorea, Raiatea, Tahaa, Huahine, Tikehau, Rurutu, Tubuai) and in 2009 (Tahiti, Moorea, Raiatea, Bora Bora, Maupiti, Manihi, Fakarava)
Budget: the estimated total expenses for the project are $ 18567.31 which includes international travel ($ 7476.88), guesthouses accommodation ($ 4872.52), food ($ 2000), travel between islands ($ 1628.30), field research expenses ($ 1589.61) and miscellaneous on-site expenses ($ 1000)
Funding: The project is essentially financed by the family's personal savings, currently $ 6350.
A portion of the international tickets between Miami and Papeete was paid with reward points from the airline (268,000 reward Miles saved in 15 years, equal to $ 3216).
The sale of Sébastien's shell collection brought in $ 945 for the project.
$ 8056.31 are still to be raised for the realization of the project in the foreseen conditions.
